Choosing a birth location that supports your needs and desires as well as a knowledgeable and supportive primary care provider is one of the most important decisions you can make that will affect the choices that you have in labor and the outcome of your birth. Look for a doctor or midwife who is willing to have an open, honest, and respectful dialogue about evidence-based options during labor and birth, who is also willing to explain the risks and benefits of each.
When considering an intervention use the B.R.A.I.N. acronym:
What are the BENEFITS to this procedure?
What are the RISKS?
What are the ALTERNATIVES or options?
What are your INSTICTS telling you?
What if we do NOTHING right now? Is there harm in delaying the procedure?
AND MOST OF ALL….
Hire a DOULA to support you during labor and birth. Having a doula may decrease the risk of cesarean birth. A Cochrane review showed a 39% decrease in the risk of cesarean when women had continuous labor support from a doula.
